Countries urged to prioritize COVID-19 vaccination for high-risk groups

The World Health Organizations Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has issued new recommendations regarding COVID-19 vaccinations for high-risk populations. The advisory group suggests that individuals in the highest risk categories, which include older adults, particularly those aged 65 and above, as well as older adults with substantial comorbidities or severe obesity, should receive two doses of the routine COVID-19 vaccine annually, spaced six months apart.

This recommendation comes as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, especially among vulnerable populations who may be at greater risk of severe illness or complications from the virus. SAGEs guidance takes into account the evolving nature of the pandemic and the emergence of new variants, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vaccination coverage in high-risk groups.

It is essential for these populations to consult healthcare professionals for personalized advice and to stay informed on updated vaccination guidelines as the situation continues to evolve. The WHO continues to advocate for vaccination as a critical tool in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and protecting public health.
