“Countries Urged to Prioritize Vaccination for High-Risk Groups for Severe COVID-19”
The World Health Organizations Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has issued a recommendation that individuals in high-risk categories receive two doses of the routine COVID-19 vaccination annually, spaced six months apart. This guidance particularly targets the oldest adults, as well as older adults who have significant comorbidities or severe obesity.
High-risk groups have been identified as particularly vulnerable to severe illness from COVID-19. The recommendation aims to enhance protection for these populations by ensuring they maintain robust immunity against the virus, which continues to mutate and circulate globally.
In addition to the vaccination schedule, public health officials continue to advocate for implementing supplementary preventive measures, such as mask-wearing in crowded settings and good hygiene practices, to further mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. SAGEs guidance aligns with ongoing efforts to adapt immunization strategies in response to evolving public health needs and varying levels of virus spread in different regions.
