Russian Oil Tanker Diverted to India Instead of China

The oil tanker Aqua Titan, reportedly transporting approximately 770,000 barrels of crude oil, has altered its course in Southeast Asia and is now heading towards Mangalore port in India. Analysts suggest that this vessel is linked to the “dark fleet,” a term used to describe a network of tankers primarily controlled by the Russian state that operate outside of established shipping regulations.

This re-routing comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and sanctions that have affected Russia’s ability to transport oil globally. The “dark fleet” is believed to be utilized by Russia to circumvent these restrictions, enabling the continued export of its oil amidst a backdrop of international scrutiny.

The Mangalore port is a crucial hub for oil imports in India, with the country seeking to diversify its energy sources and strengthen its strategic reserves. The arrival of the Aqua Titan could signify an increase in Indian imports of Russian crude, which have been rising in the past year as India looks for affordable energy options in response to soaring global oil prices.
