“Amidst West Asia Conflict Impacting Gas Supply, Revisiting Indias Unimplemented Gas Grid Plans”
India is accelerating its efforts on the National Coal Gasification Mission, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the countrys energy independence. This move has drawn attention to a proposal made in 1955 by Syed Husain Zaheer, who envisioned the establishment of a national gas grid. At the time, his concept was largely overlooked by policymakers.
Zaheer’s proposal gained significance in hindsight, particularly during the global oil crisis of 1973, which underscored the vulnerabilities of oil-dependent economies. The crisis highlighted the need for alternative energy sources and robust infrastructure to mitigate the risks associated with fossil fuel dependence.
The current National Coal Gasification Mission aims to transform Indias vast coal reserves into gas, thereby diversifying the energy mix and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. By advancing gasification technologies, India aspires to enhance energy security, foster sustainable growth, and promote cleaner energy alternatives. As part of this initiative, the government is exploring investment opportunities and public-private partnerships to facilitate the development of the necessary infrastructure and technology.
