Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: Examination of Health Sector Achievements and Challenges
The Left has praised the advancements in the health sector over the past decade as remarkable. However, critics point to several persistent challenges that undermine these claims. Notably, high out-of-pocket expenditures for patients remain a significant concern, putting financial strain on individuals seeking medical care. Furthermore, while infrastructure improvements have been made, there continues to be a shortage of adequately trained healthcare professionals to support patient needs effectively.
In addition, the implementation of the Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhati (KASP), a health insurance scheme aimed at providing financial assistance for medical treatment, has faced various issues. These include bureaucratic delays and insufficient outreach to potential beneficiaries, which have hampered access to the intended support.
Despite the achievements that have been made in terms of upgrading facilities and increasing availability of health services, stakeholders argue that a comprehensive approach is needed to address these ongoing challenges in the healthcare system. Efforts to improve human resources, reduce out-of-pocket costs, and streamline healthcare initiative implementations will be critical in ensuring effective healthcare delivery in the future.
