West Bengal SIR Reports 12% Decline in Electorate Since October; 2.7 Million Voters Currently Under Review for Exclusion

Since the initiation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, approximately 9.1 million voters have been removed from the electoral rolls. The highest concentration of voter deletions is reported in the Muslim-majority Murshidabad district, which is followed by North 24 Parganas and Malda districts.

This voter removal process is part of the Election Commissions effort to update the electoral rolls and ensure their accuracy. The SIR aims to remove ineligible voters, such as those who have passed away, relocated, or are otherwise no longer eligible to vote.

The significant number of deletions and the areas affected have raised concerns regarding voter access and representation, particularly in regions with high minority populations. Officials have stated that these measures are in accordance with electoral regulations and emphasize that affected individuals can resubmit their applications for inclusion in the voter list if they believe their removal was erroneous. The Election Commission encourages all eligible voters to check their status and take necessary action to ensure their participation in upcoming elections.
