Indias Interest in Fast Breeder Nuclear Reactors: An Analysis

Indias nuclear power landscape is primarily characterized by the use of pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs). These reactors operate by utilizing heavy water as both a coolant and a neutron moderator, which allows them to use natural uranium as fuel. However, a significant limitation of these PHWRs is their efficiency; only about 1% of the nuclear fuel undergoes fission before it becomes spent and unusable.

This low efficiency means that a substantial amount of nuclear material is not utilized effectively, raising concerns about resource utilization and waste generation in the long term. As India continues to expand its nuclear energy program to meet its growing energy needs and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, discussions are underway regarding the potential adoption of advanced reactor designs. These designs may include fast breeder reactors and light water reactors, which are expected to improve fuel efficiency and waste management, thereby enhancing the overall performance of Indias nuclear energy sector. Additionally, the Indian government is investing in research and development to explore alternative nuclear technologies that could provide more sustainable and efficient options for the countrys future energy landscape.
