India Meteorological Department Reports Anticipated Below Normal Monsoon for India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated a likelihood of El Niño conditions developing after June this year. Historically, El Niño events, which are characterized by the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, have been associated with reduced monsoon rainfall in India. Records show that approximately 60% of El Niño years have resulted in decreased precipitation during the critical monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September.

El Niño can disrupt typical weather patterns, leading to significant agricultural and economic impacts in countries reliant on monsoon rains. In India, a deficit in rainfall can affect crop yields, particularly for staple foods such as rice and wheat, and may also influence water supply in various regions. Meteorologists and agricultural experts will be closely monitoring the development of these conditions to assess their potential effects and advise on precautionary measures for farmers and policymakers.
