Centre proposes redistribution of Lok Sabha seats among states based on 2011 Census data

The government has circulated draft versions of a proposed Constitution Amendment Bill and a Delimitation Bill, which could significantly impact the representation of southern states in the Lok Sabha. If these proposals are accepted, southern states may see a reduction in their share of parliamentary seats.

The proposed changes include an increase in the total number of Lok Sabha seats to a maximum of 850. This change aims to accommodate India’s growing population and ensure fairer representation across various regions. The amendments will initiate a redrawing of constituency boundaries, which may result in shifting seat allocations among states.

As the bills undergo review, officials and political analysts are evaluating the potential implications for regional representation, particularly concerning how this may affect political dynamics in southern states. The government has stated that the reforms intend to create a more equitable parliamentary system that reflects demographic changes across the country. Further discussions and debates in Parliament are expected before any final decisions are made.
