Increased Female Participation in Tamil Nadu Elections, Yet Male Candidates Predominate

In the 1967 elections, the participation of women candidates was limited to just 11 individuals, representing a mere 1.41% of the total candidate pool. Fast forward to the upcoming 2026 elections, and the number of women candidates has significantly increased to 443, now comprising 11.01% of all contestants.

While this growth in womens candidacy is an encouraging trend, it signifies that women still hold a relatively small proportion of the overall candidate pool. This raises ongoing discussions about gender representation in political processes and the need for initiatives aimed at enhancing womens participation in elections.
