Kerala Faces Challenges Due to Extreme Heat, Elevated UV Levels, and High Humidity
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding above-average temperatures anticipated across the state, as residents continue to experience particularly hot and humid conditions. Several locations are reportedly registering concerning levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which poses health risks such as skin damage and increased chances of heat-related illnesses.
The phenomenon known as the “urban heat island effect” is exacerbating these harsh conditions in city areas, where built-up environments trap heat, leading to noticeably higher temperatures compared to rural surroundings. This effect often results in increased energy consumption for cooling, raises concerns about public health, and can potentially affect local ecosystems.
The IMD advises citizens to take preventive measures, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing protective clothing. Local authorities are being urged to monitor the heat conditions closely, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive adequate support in coping with the heat.
