Concerns Raised Over River Bhavani Preservation in Mettupalayam Constituency Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections 2026
The river, which originates in the Nilgiri Hills and spans approximately 216 kilometers through four districts, plays a crucial role in the regions water supply. It supports over 20 combined drinking water schemes, particularly between Pillur and the Lower Bhavani reservoir, known as Bhavanisagar. However, the river has nearly dried up, with noticeable stagnation occurring in small pools between Mettupalayam town and Sirumugai since the beginning of March during the ongoing summer season.
This significant reduction in water levels is concerning for local communities that rely on the river for drinking water and irrigation. The Nilgiris region, typically characterized by its lush landscapes, has been experiencing rising temperatures and lower rainfall, contributing to this situation. Local authorities are monitoring the water levels closely and may need to explore alternative water resources to mitigate the impact of this dry spell on residents and agriculture in the affected areas.
