Farmers Groups Claim Centres Potato Procurement Price Represents Only Half of Production Costs
The Union Agriculture Ministry announced on Saturday that it has approved the procurement price of ₹6.5 per kilogram for specific agricultural commodities. However, farmer leaders have raised concerns regarding this decision, emphasizing that the cost of inputs, such as seeds, fertilizers, and labor, amounts to approximately ₹12 per kilogram. According to the farmers, to achieve a minimal profit margin, the procurement price would need to be set at a minimum of ₹15 per kilogram.
This disparity between input costs and the approved procurement price highlights ongoing challenges faced by farmers in the region, as many struggle to cover production costs amidst fluctuating market prices. Discussions regarding fair pricing and sustainable agricultural practices continue to be a focal point for farmer organizations and policymakers alike, with advocates calling for pricing structures that better reflect the economic realities of agricultural production.
