D.K. Shivakumar Announces Submission of Mekedatu DPR to Centre Within Ten Days
The Karnataka government has established a technical team to accelerate the implementation of the Mekedatu project, following a directive from the Supreme Court. This team will be led by the Director of the Karnataka Engineering Research Station (KERS).
The Mekedatu project aims to construct a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery River to meet the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and surrounding regions, as well as to generate hydroelectric power. The project has faced various legal and environmental challenges, including concerns from neighboring Tamil Nadu over water-sharing.
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling has provided a framework for the Karnataka government to move forward with the project, and the technical team is expected to address the regulatory, environmental, and engineering aspects to ensure compliance with legal guidelines while expediting the projects timeline. The government views the project as crucial for regional development and sustainable water management.
