ANRF to Broaden Research Focus Beyond Top Universities; DST Secretary Highlights Indias Efforts for Scalable Innovation
India’s research landscape is characterized by a significant disparity, with only 5–10% of universities producing high-quality research output. In a recent interview, Professor Abhay Karandikar discussed the efforts being made to address these imbalances through initiatives such as the Atal New India Challenge (ANRF) and the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) fund.
Professor Karandikar highlighted that one of the primary goals of these initiatives is to enhance collaboration between industry and academia, thereby fostering an environment conducive to innovation and practical applications of research findings. He stressed the importance of transitioning from a focus on publication-driven outputs to an emphasis on translational research, which aims to convert scientific findings into real-world solutions that can be scaled effectively.
The RDI fund, among other objectives, is designed to improve access to research infrastructure, enabling a broader range of institutions to contribute to meaningful research activities. By facilitating greater collaboration and resource sharing, the initiatives seek to cultivate a more robust research ecosystem in India, ensuring that high-quality research output is not limited to a select few universities but is a widespread achievement across the nation.
