Modi Engages with Matuas as Campaign Intensifies; Mamatas Support Base Active in Bhabanipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Matua community, urging its members not to be misled by claims made by the Trinamool Congress regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He assured community members that all refugees in India would be granted a permanent address, reinforcing the governments commitment to their welfare and integration.

In response, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed confidence in her partys performance in the recent state elections, stating that the Trinamool Congress has achieved a significant victory, which she referred to as “a century in the first round.” She also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting that it has shown signs of apprehension regarding the electoral climate in West Bengal.

The CAA, enacted in December 2019, aims to provide a pathway to citizenship for non-Muslim religious minorities from neighboring countries. Its implementation has been met with both support and opposition, leading to significant political discourse in the region. The state elections in West Bengal have further intensified this debate, as various parties mobilize their support bases around issues of identity, citizenship, and governance.

The political dynamics in West Bengal remain complex, with the BJP and the Trinamool Congress vying for influence in a state known for its diverse demographic and political history.
