Kerala Experiences Intense Heatwave; Palakkad Records Temperatures Exceeding 40°C

Recent weather reports indicate that high humidity levels are contributing to a significant increase in the perceived temperature during the daytime. Humidity refers to the amount of moisture present in the air; when humidity levels rise, the bodys ability to cool itself through perspiration diminishes. This can create a discomforting environment, often leading individuals to feel hotter than the actual air temperature.

Meteorologists explain that the combination of high temperatures and humidity can lead to heat index values that are considerably higher than the actual temperature reading. For instance, a temperature of 85°F with 70% humidity can feel like 95°F to the human body.

Prolonged exposure to such conditions can pose health risks, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The National Weather Service often issues heat advisories in response to high heat index values, advising individuals to stay hydrated, seek shade, and limit outdoor activities during peak hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports and take precautions, especially during summer months when humidity levels can rise significantly.
