Union Government Reports Strong and Stable Fertilizer Security

For the Kharif season of 2026, the Ministry of Fertilisers has projected a requirement of 390.54 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of fertilisers to adequately support agricultural productivity. Currently, the available stock stands at 190 LMT, which accounts for approximately 49% of the projected requirement, according to statements made by the Additional Secretary of the Ministry.

The Kharif season, which generally runs from June to October in India, relies heavily on the timely availability of fertilisers for crops such as rice, maize, and cotton. Historically, the management of fertiliser stocks has been crucial for ensuring optimal crop yields during this period. The Ministrys assessment comes at a time when agricultural productivity is of paramount importance, particularly in the context of rising food demand and efforts to ensure food security.

To address the potential shortfall, the Ministry is likely to implement measures aimed at boosting production and supply chains, including collaborations with fertiliser manufacturers and enhancing distribution networks. Additionally, the government may explore options for importing fertilisers to meet the expected demand for the upcoming Kharif season.
