“Kaanappadavukal 2026 Highlights the Unique Features of Keralas Kole Wetlands”
A photo exhibition showcasing the Ramsar-listed ecosystem is currently on display at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Thrissur. This exhibition features a series of photographs that capture the unique biodiversity and ecological significance of the wetlands in the region, which have been designated as a Ramsar site due to their importance in global conservation efforts.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the month-long Kole Festival has commenced, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and traditional practices associated with the Kole wetlands. The festival includes various activities, such as local handicraft displays, cultural performances, and workshops aimed at raising awareness about the ecological importance of wetlands.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, established in 1971, emphasizes the need to protect these vital ecosystems, which provide numerous benefits, including flood control, water purification, and habitat for numerous species. The Kole wetlands, located in Kerala, are particularly noted for their diverse flora and fauna, and play a critical role in sustaining the local communities that rely on these resources.
The exhibition at the art gallery and the accompanying festival aim to engage the community and promote conservation efforts while celebrating the ecological and cultural heritage of the region. Visitors can explore the exhibition and participate in festival activities throughout the month to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of wetlands and their preservation.
