Kathmandu Raises Concerns with India and China Regarding Kailash Yatra Ahead of Misris Anticipated Visit to Nepal

Nepal has once again emphasized its territorial claim over the Lipulekh Pass, a strategic location in the Himalayas, while also expressing concerns regarding the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, an important pilgrimage for Hindu devotees. The Lipulekh Pass has historically been a route for this pilgrimage since 1954, as asserted by Indian officials.

The tensions over the Lipulekh Pass have been an ongoing issue between the two neighboring countries, particularly after the Indian government established a new road through the region in 2020, which heightened diplomatic strains. In response, Nepal released a new political map that included the Lipulekh Pass within its territory.

As part of diplomatic efforts, discussions were scheduled between representatives of the two nations. However, it remains uncertain whether the Indian Foreign Secretary will have an opportunity to meet with Nepals Prime Minister during the upcoming visit, which had been initially planned for May 11-12. The dynamics of this meeting are crucial for maintaining bilateral relations and addressing outstanding border issues.

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is significant for many Hindus, as it involves travel to sacred sites considered important in the religious texts. The passage through Lipulekh provides the shortest route for pilgrims coming from India, emphasizing the regional importance of the border area for cultural and religious exchanges.
