DNA Profiling Program for Captive Elephants Launches in Andhra Pradesh
The recent exercise is part of a broader initiative known as Project Elephant, aimed at enhancing elephant conservation and management through the implementation of advanced scientific techniques. According to the District Forest Officer (DFO) of Chittoor, this project seeks not only to protect the elephant population but also to address issues related to human-elephant conflict, habitat degradation, and poaching.
Project Elephant was launched by the Government of India in 1992, focusing on the protection of elephants and their habitats across the country. The program emphasizes scientific research, community involvement, and sustainable management practices to ensure the long-term survival of this keystone species. The inclusion of advanced methodologies signifies a growing recognition of the need for data-driven approaches in wildlife conservation, which can lead to more effective strategies tailored to the needs of both elephants and local communities.
