Impact of Tourism on Stress Hormones in Tiger Habitats

A recent study conducted by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad has revealed that tigers inhabiting areas adjacent to tourism roads and human activities exhibit elevated stress levels. The research indicates that tigers residing in core zones—areas that are supposed to be minimally disturbed—display more pronounced stress responses compared to those found in buffer zones, which are designed to provide a transitional area between human activity and protected wildlife regions.

This study highlights the pressing need for responsible management of tourism activities in national parks and wildlife reserves. Researchers expressed concerns that if disturbances from tourism are not adequately controlled, they could negatively impact key aspects of tiger life, including breeding success and the development of cubs, which are crucial for sustaining tiger populations.
