Jaishankar: India-Trinidad Archival Agreement Aids Diaspora in Ancestral Research

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the significance that Prime Minister Narendra Modi places on the creation of a comprehensive database for the Girmitya community. This initiative aims to ensure greater awareness and understanding of the historical and cultural contributions of this group, which consists of descendants of indentured laborers who were transported from India to various regions, including the Caribbean and parts of Africa, during the colonial era.

The ministry is actively conducting research on the legacy of the Girmitya people, which encompasses their social, cultural, and economic impacts. The Prime Ministers commitment to this project highlights the Indian governments efforts to acknowledge and celebrate the diasporas heritage, as well as to foster connections with communities of Indian origin around the world. This initiative reflects a broader aim to strengthen bilateral ties between India and nations with significant Girmitya populations, promoting cultural exchange and collaboration.
