India and Trinidad Sign Archival Agreement to Assist Diaspora in Tracing Ancestral Roots, Says Jaishankar

In a recent statement, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modis commitment to establishing a comprehensive database for the Girmitya community, which includes descendants of indentured laborers who were taken from India to various colonies during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This initiative aims not only to document the historical legacy of the Girmitya people but also to facilitate further research into their contributions to society and culture in the regions they inhabit.

The Girmitya community holds significant historical and cultural value, particularly in countries such as Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana, where many descendants reside today. The proposed database would serve as a tool for preserving their history, fostering connections among community members, and promoting awareness about their heritage. Additionally, the initiative reflects the Indian governments efforts to reconnect with its diaspora and support the cultural ties that bind India to its citizens abroad.
