Indias Strategic Oil Reserve Reaches 53 Lakh MT, Aiming for 65 Lakh MT, Says PM Modi

During a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India currently possesses a strategic petroleum reserve of 5.3 million metric tons (MT) and set a target to expand this reserve to 6.5 million MT. This move comes amid global energy supply concerns, particularly in light of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for oil transport.
The strategic petroleum reserve is crucial for ensuring energy security in the country, particularly during disruptions in supply due to geopolitical factors. India imports crude oil from approximately 41 different countries, underscoring the nations reliance on a diverse range of sources for its energy needs.
In addition to strengthening its reserves, the Indian government is actively working to enhance its energy infrastructure and explore alternative energy avenues to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. This initiative aligns with its broader strategy of promoting renewable energy and achieving sustainability goals.
The announcement reflects Indias commitment to bolstering its energy security amid fluctuating global oil prices and rising geopolitical tensions that could impact supply routes. The governments proactive approach aims to fortify the nations preparedness for any future disruptions in oil supply.
