Scrutiny of OCI Status for Foreigners Who Voted in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election

The number of foreigners of Indian origin found to have voted fraudulently has risen to 30. Authorities indicate that these individuals falsely declared when applying for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards that they had either surrendered their voter identity cards or removed their names from electoral rolls. Such declarations are being categorized as misleading, and legal actions are expected to follow.

The OCI card permits foreign citizens of Indian origin to travel to India and provides certain rights and privileges; however, it does not confer the right to vote. Indian authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding these declarations and may impose penalties as per relevant electoral laws. This raised concern highlights the need for stringent verification processes during the application for citizenship-related documents to prevent misuse of voting rights.
