Ladakh Leaders Scheduled to Meet with Home Ministry Officials on May 22, Sonam Wangchuk Included in Delegation

Members of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) convened for their first meeting since February 4. These two groups represent the interests of the Leh and Kargil districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The primary agenda of the meeting focused on the ongoing demands from both groups for constitutional safeguards, which include the reinstatement of statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The Sixth Schedule provides for the administration of Tribal Areas in India, offering special autonomy and rights to local communities. Since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, both the LAB and KDA have been vocal about their concerns regarding governance, development, and the preservation of local culture and identity. The meeting reflects a continued effort by these organizations to unite their voices in pursuit of these constitutional guarantees. Further discussions are expected as representatives outline their proposals and seek dialogue with the central government on the matter.
