Study Emphasizes Importance of Proper Maintenance for RO Systems to Ensure Effectiveness

A recent survey conducted in Chennai has analyzed water samples from 216 households, comprising a total of 262 samples, to evaluate the effectiveness of household water treatment systems, particularly reverse osmosis (RO) systems. The investigation encompassed both treated water from these systems and source water to determine the presence of contaminants.

The results revealed a concerning statistic: 31% of the post-RO water samples tested positive for Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium commonly associated with fecal contamination and various waterborne diseases. This finding raises important questions regarding the reliability of household water treatment methods in ensuring safe drinking water.

Further investigations may be required to understand the reasons behind the presence of E. coli in treated water and to assess the operational efficacy and maintenance practices of household treatment systems. Public health officials may consider this data while addressing water safety concerns and informing residents about best practices in water treatment and hygiene.
