Latin Catholic Church Requests Kerala Government to Expedite Relief for Fishermen Before Upcoming Challenging Season
In a recent closed-door meeting, Fisheries Minister Abdul Gafoor met with Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop Thomas J Netto to discuss the challenges faced by the local fishing community. Following the meeting, Church spokesperson Fr. Beed Manoj Amado expressed concerns about an impending “rough season” for fishermen and urged the government to accelerate relief measures to support those affected.
The fishing industry, a critical component of the economy in coastal Kerala, has been facing various challenges, including adverse weather conditions and fluctuations in fish stocks. The Archbishop highlighted the importance of timely assistance to help the fishing community navigate these difficulties, particularly given the reliance of many families on this sector for their livelihood.
As concerns grow over the impacts of seasonal changes and climatic factors, the government has been prompted to review its existing support systems for the fishing community. Previous relief efforts have included financial aid, provisions for essential supplies, and infrastructure improvements to enhance safety for local fishermen. Stakeholders are optimistic that the governments prompt action can mitigate the challenges that lie ahead.
