Japan Halts Imports of Indian Mango Varieties, Including Kesar, Alphonso, and Langra
In the fiscal year 2025-26, Gujarats Kesar mango was the leading variety among Indias mango exports to Japan, contributing approximately $0.2 million out of a total of $1.54 million earned from both fresh and processed mango shipments to the country.
The Kesar mango, known for its sweet flavor and vibrant color, is cultivated predominantly in the state of Gujarat and has gained popularity in international markets due to its superior quality. The increase in exports can be attributed to rising demand for quality mangoes in Japan, driven by the expanding Japanese market for tropical fruits and the growing trend of incorporating exotic produce into culinary practices.
India, as the world’s largest producer of mangoes, has been focusing on enhancing its export capabilities, especially to markets like Japan, where the fruit is viewed as a luxury item. This trend not only benefits local farmers in Gujarat but also contributes positively to Indias agricultural economy. The Indian governments efforts in better packaging, quality control, and adherence to phytosanitary measures have further facilitated these export activities, enhancing the countrys presence in global fruit markets.
