Governors Policy Address: Kerala to Implement Phased Approach for Elderly-Friendly Cities

The Vayomithram scheme, originally initiated by the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government under the leadership of the late Oommen Chandy, is set to undergo an expansion. The scheme aims to provide home-based healthcare and mental health support specifically tailored for the elderly population.

In its new phase, the initiative will extend its services to all block panchayats, enabling a broader reach and impact. This expansion is designed to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens, ensuring they receive necessary medical care and emotional support within the comfort of their homes.

The Vayomithram scheme includes services such as regular health check-ups, mental wellness programs, and assistance with chronic disease management. The program aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting the health and well-being of the elderly, particularly in light of the growing aging population in the region.

Local health authorities are expected to collaborate with community organizations to implement the expanded services effectively, ensuring that elderly citizens receive comprehensive care across various panchayats.
