Greens Advocate for Regulations on Tourism Activities in Wayanad
The Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samiti has raised concerns regarding ongoing unregulated tourism activities in the mountain ranges, despite the significant impact of the Puthumala landslide that occurred in 2024. The landslide, which resulted in loss of life and considerable damage to the local ecosystem, highlighted vulnerabilities in the regions natural terrain.
The organization emphasizes that the influx of tourists, coupled with insufficient regulatory measures, is exacerbating environmental degradation and increasing the risk of further incidents. They are advocating for stringent policies to manage tourism sustainably and protect the delicate mountain ecosystem in Wayanad.
In response to these concerns, local authorities and environmental groups are being urged to collaborate on implementing better regulations aimed at balancing tourism development with environmental preservation. This includes enforcing limits on the number of visitors, promoting eco-friendly practices, and raising awareness about the regions ecological importance.
