Government Supports Proposal for Farmer Discom Initiative
The Chairman and Managing Director of Telangana Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TGRPDCL), Musharraf Ali Faruqui, announced that the proposed model for electricity distribution will not include metering for agricultural consumers. This decision comes as the existing electricity distribution companies (discoms) in Telangana are facing significant financial challenges. As of fiscal year 2025, the cumulative losses of these discoms are projected to reach ₹69,741 crore. Additionally, outstanding dues owed by government departments have contributed significantly to this financial strain, amounting to ₹54,090 crore.
The financial health of discoms is critical for ensuring reliable electricity supply and infrastructure development. The lack of metering for agricultural customers is part of a broader strategy aimed at balancing the need for agricultural support and the financial viability of the power sector in Telangana. Stakeholders are closely monitoring these developments as they may impact future policies regarding electricity consumption and distribution in the agricultural sector.
