USTR Proposes 12.5% Additional Duties on India and 53 Other Countries for Violations Related to Forced Labor Imports

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has initiated actions following investigations into 60 countries regarding their alleged noncompliance with the enforcement of bans on imports produced through forced labor. The USTR indicated that these measures were taken due to concerns about human rights violations connected to forced labor practices in global supply chains.

The USTRs investigations are part of a broader effort to promote ethical trade practices and protect workers’ rights worldwide. The findings highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring that products entering the U.S. market are produced under fair labor conditions.

Countries targeted in the investigation may face increased scrutiny and potential trade repercussions if they do not strengthen their enforcement mechanisms against forced labor in their production processes. The ongoing dialogue surrounding forced labor and trade policy underscores the U.S. governments commitment to addressing human rights issues as part of its trade agenda.

This development is part of a larger movement among various nations and international organizations that are increasingly focusing on labor rights concerns and working to eliminate forced labor from global supply chains.
