Finance Ministry Report in 2024 States Nicobar Port Lacks Strategic Goals

The Indian government has classified the proposed ₹81,000-crore Great Nicobar Project as a strategic initiative, which has led to the decision to withhold the contents of a report prepared by a High Powered Committee (HPC) that assesses the cumulative environmental impact of the project.

The Great Nicobar Project, aimed at developing infrastructure and promoting economic growth in the Nicobar Islands, has raised concerns among environmentalists and local communities regarding its potential ecological consequences. The HPCs report, which is expected to provide insights into the environmental implications of such large-scale development, remains undisclosed due to its classified status.

Official sources have indicated that the classification is meant to protect national interests and facilitate planning and execution without external pressures. However, this has led to criticism from various stakeholders who advocate for greater transparency and public access to information regarding projects that may affect local ecosystems and biodiversity.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has been tasked with reviewing the projects environmental clearance, and calls for more rigorous environmental assessments are gaining momentum in light of ongoing climate change concerns. As the project progresses, it remains crucial to balance developmental goals with ecological sustainability to ensure the long-term health of the Nicobar Islands unique environment.
