Kerala Forest Minister Introduces 100-Day Action Plan to Address Increasing Human-Wildlife Conflicts

The Department of Natural Resources has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the carrying capacity of the states forests. This initiative aims to address rising public concerns over animal overpopulation in these areas.

Carrying capacity refers to the maximum number of individuals of a species that an environment can support sustainably without causing degradation to the ecosystem. The assessment will involve analyzing various factors, including food availability, habitat conditions, and the overall health of forest ecosystems.

In recent years, communities have raised alarms about the impact of high animal populations, particularly deer, on local agriculture, forestry, and native plant species. Overpopulation can lead to increased vehicle collisions, crop damage, and habitat destruction, prompting the need for a balanced approach to wildlife management.

The Department plans to collaborate with wildlife biologists, ecologists, and community stakeholders throughout the assessment process. The findings will guide future wildlife management policies and ensure that ecological integrity is maintained while addressing community concerns. A timeline for the assessment and subsequent public meetings will be announced in the coming months.
