Kerala Agriculture Minister Announces Renewal of Paddy Procurement Agreement with Public Sector Banks

Minister Reports on Paddy Procurement Changes in Palakkad

In a recent statement, the Minister confirmed that during the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) governments administration, paddy procurement in the Palakkad district was conducted on an experimental basis through cooperative societies. The Minister noted that this approach was part of a broader initiative to enhance local agriculture and support farmer cooperatives.

The current United Democratic Front (UDF) government has opted to preserve this procurement method, indicating that all paddy purchases will now be managed exclusively through the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, commonly known as Supplyco. This decision is aimed at improving the efficiency of the procurement process and ensuring better price stability for farmers.

Paddy procurement through Supplyco has been a long-standing practice in the region, designed to facilitate a controlled market for local rice producers. The UDF government believes that consolidating procurement under Supplyco will streamline operations and benefit farmers in the long term.

The Minister emphasized ongoing efforts to boost local agriculture and expressed confidence that these changes would contribute positively to the regional economy and the welfare of farmers in Palakkad.
