Government Reduces Subsidized LPG Cylinder Allocation Under Ujjwala Scheme from 9 to 4

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reported that beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) consume approximately four to five liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders annually. The PMUY, launched in May 2016, aims to provide clean cooking fuel to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households across India.

Since its inception, the scheme has successfully distributed around 10.55 crore LPG connections, significantly improving access to clean cooking fuels in rural and semi-urban areas. The initiative is part of the Indian governments broader efforts to promote health and environmental benefits by reducing the reliance on traditional cooking methods, which often involve wood and biomass and contribute to indoor air pollution.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of continuous support and training for beneficiaries to ensure optimal usage of the cylinders provided under the scheme, contributing to overall household welfare. The government remains committed to expanding access to LPG to promote sustainable energy practices across the country.
