Fertilizer Ministry Proposes Doubling of FY27 Subsidy Allocation to Rs 1.71 Lakh Crore
The Fertiliser Ministry has formally requested an increase of 100% in its subsidy budget for the fiscal year 2027, proposing to raise the allocation to Rs 1.71 lakh crore. This significant request is largely attributed to escalating global fertiliser prices and heightened import costs stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Should the government approve this increase, the total subsidy expenditure for the fiscal year could surpass Rs 3 lakh crore.
The rising fertiliser prices have major implications for agricultural production costs, potentially impacting food security and farmer incomes across the country. According to industry experts, the conflict in the West Asia region has disrupted supply chains and contributed to inflationary pressures in the global commodities market, further complicating the situation for Indian farmers who rely heavily on subsidized fertilisers for their crop yields.
Additionally, the proposed budget increase also aligns with the governments broader objectives of ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and supporting the farming community during times of economic uncertainty. The Fertiliser Ministry is expected to present more detailed analyses and justifications in subsequent discussions with financial authorities.
