Athletes Await National Sports Awards as Ministry Remains Silent
Recent concerns regarding the delay in the award process have extended beyond former recipients. Following the announcement of a re-evaluation process by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Tejaswin Shankar, the Asian Championships gold medallist in decathlon and a nominee for the Arjuna Award, expressed his disappointment publicly. In a post on X in April, Shankar voiced that these delays could be demoralizing for athletes and coaches, suggesting that it reflects a lack of respect for their contributions and efforts in sports.
The Arjuna Award, initiated in 1961, is one of Indias highest sporting honors, aimed at recognizing outstanding achievements in sports. The recent re-evaluation process, aimed at ensuring fairness and transparency in the awarding of sports honors, has drawn mixed reactions from the sporting community. Some athletes worry that prolonged deliberation may hinder motivation and support for emerging talents. The Ministry has yet to provide a timeline for the completion of the re-evaluation process, leaving many in the sporting community concerned about the implications for athletes awaiting recognition.
