EAC-PM Proposes Targeted Seat Splitting for Delimitation, Presents Model for 50% Increase in Large States
The advisory council has compiled a comprehensive dataset concerning Lok Sabha election results from 2009 to 2024. This dataset aims to establish a statistical correlation between voter turnout, the size of constituencies, and five relevant demographic features of each constituency. Based on their model, the council proposes an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to 824 seats.
This recommendation aligns with the initial proposals put forth by the Central Government in April, during the introduction of delimitation-related bills. However, those bills did not secure passage in Parliament. The increase in seat count is expected to better represent Indias diverse population and varying constituency conditions. Delimitation, which refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies, is a significant step in ensuring equitable representation in the democratic process. This recommendation is anticipated to spark discussions among lawmakers and the public, particularly regarding its potential implications for political representation and electoral dynamics in India.
