EAC-PM Proposes Focused Seat Redistribution for Delimitation, Presenting Model Allowing 50% Increase for Major States
The advisory council has compiled a comprehensive dataset analyzing elections for Lok Sabha seats from 2009 to 2024. This dataset aims to establish a statistical relationship between voter turnout, the size of constituencies, and five key compositional characteristics of these constituencies.
The findings from this analysis suggest that increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats to 824 may enhance electoral representation. This recommendation aligns with proposals made by the government earlier in April regarding the Delimitation-related Bills. However, these bills were not successfully passed in Parliament at that time.
Delimitation refers to the redrawing of boundaries of electoral constituencies, and discussions surrounding it are vital in light of changing demographics and population growth in India. The advisory council’s model reflects a systematic approach to understanding how these variables interact and how they can influence future electoral dynamics. Further developments on this topic will depend on political discussions and legislative action in the coming sessions.
