Assams GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchi Expands Export Market to Dubai and Singapore

Tezpur litchi, a renowned variety from Assam, has achieved a significant milestone by making its international debut with the first consignment exported to Dubai. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which aims to promote agricultural exports from the northeastern region of India.

Tezpur litchi, recognized for its geographical indication (GI) status, is celebrated for its unique flavor and aroma, distinguishing it from other litchi varieties. This preliminary shipment not only provides farmers with the opportunity to secure higher market prices but also paves the way for improved livelihoods in the region.

The export marks a significant advancement in the centuries-old cultivation of litchi in Tezpur, highlighting efforts to expand the agricultural export market in India. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on enhancing the visibility and market access of produce from the Northeast, known for its diverse agricultural products. With the successful export to Dubai, stakeholders anticipate the opening of new markets for Tezpur litchi and similar crops, which could lead to increased economic opportunities for local farmers and communities.
