Kochi Corporation Initiates Efforts to Relocate Registered Street Vendors
In July, authorized vendors will be relocated to 67 designated vending zones established across 76 divisions as part of the implementation of the Street Vendors Act, 2014. This initiative aims to provide a structured and regulated environment for street vendors, ensuring their rights are protected while promoting public order and safety.
The Street Vendors Act was enacted to recognize the contribution of street vendors to urban economies and to improve their working conditions. The identification of these vending zones is part of a broader effort by local government authorities to accommodate and manage street vendors in a way that minimizes disruption to pedestrian traffic and enhances urban cleanliness.
The relocation process will involve consultations with vendors to ensure a smooth transition into these new zones, and authorities are expected to provide signage and support to help vendors adapt to the changes. These designated areas are intended to better serve both vendors and customers, making it easier for the public to access goods while allowing for better regulation and oversight of street commerce.
