Assam Government Urged to Pause Evictions of Forest Dwellers Under British-Era Regulations

The All India Union of Forest Working People has raised concerns regarding the planned eviction of four taungya villagers from the Lutumari Longjap reserve forest in Nagaon district. The organization argues that this action violates the provisions outlined in the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act of 2006.

This legislation was enacted to recognize the rights of forest-dependent communities and ensure their protection from displacement. The taungya system, which combines agriculture and forestry, has historically involved communities engaging in sustainable farming practices within forested areas. The unions statement highlights the need to uphold the rights of indigenous and traditional forest communities in accordance with national laws aimed at safeguarding their livelihoods.

The ongoing situation has drawn attention to the balance between environmental conservation efforts and the rights of local populations who depend on forest resources for their survival. Further dialogue and investigation into the implications of such evictions are necessary to ensure compliance with existing legal frameworks and to support the communities affected.
