KMC Renames Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road
The recent discourse surrounding Suhrawardy Avenue has drawn attention to the historical context of its naming. Some members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and various right-wing groups have associated the avenue with Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, a prominent political leader known for his role during the communal riots of 1946. However, scholars and historians clarify that the avenue was, in fact, named after his uncle, Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy, who was not involved in the events of that period.
In a significant move reflecting historical reinterpretation, the road has been officially renamed Gopal Mukherjee Road. Mukherjee is remembered for his efforts to protect numerous Hindu families during the violent unrest known as the “Great Calcutta Killings” of 1946, a tragic episode that resulted in widespread communal violence and loss of life. This renaming serves to acknowledge his humanitarian contributions during a turbulent time in the regions history.
The debate surrounding these historical figures highlights the complexities of memory and representation in urban naming practices, as communities seek to reclaim narratives and honor those who acted with courage amidst chaos.
