Government Initiates Procurement of 7.24 Lakh MT Green Ammonia to Decrease Fertilizer Imports

India is taking significant steps to enhance its production of Green Urea through a newly established roadmap, which is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The government plans to procure 724,000 metric tonnes of Green Ammonia each year to support this initiative.

The move aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported urea, which has historically made India vulnerable to fluctuations in global markets. In addition, the initiative supports Indias broader goals of decarbonizing fertilizer production and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Green Urea, produced using renewable energy sources rather than fossil fuels, aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and advance clean energy technologies. The initiative is expected not only to bolster domestic production but also encourage research and innovation in green technology within the agricultural sector.

To implement this roadmap, the Indian government is likely to collaborate with various stakeholders, including the private sector and research institutions, to develop the infrastructure and technology necessary for large-scale Green Ammonia production. This development is part of Indias commitment to achieving its climate goals under the Paris Agreement and enhancing its energy security.
