CBSE Adjusts Three-Language Policy: Classes 7-9 Students Permitted to Study Two Foreign Languages
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students in Classes VII, VIII, and IX who are currently studying two foreign languages will be allowed to maintain this language combination until Class X. This decision comes in response to recent concerns following a CBSE circular that stated students must take at least two Indian languages starting from Class VI.
In a statement, the Ministry of Education clarified that this is not a rollback of the existing language policy but rather a clarification intended to support a small group of students already enrolled in foreign language courses. This measure aims to ensure a smoother transition for these students while allowing them to continue their education without disruption.
The policy change is part of ongoing discussions about language education in India, where the Three Language Formula has been a subject of debate for its implications on linguistic diversity and educational equity. The formula encourages students to learn languages that reflect the countrys diverse cultural heritage. However, the recent developments highlight the challenges and adaptations necessary in implementing such a policy while addressing the needs of current students.
