Delhi Experiences Peak Feels Like Temperature of 51°C; Rainfall Anticipated Starting Monday
### Severe Heatwave Hits Delhi, “Feels Like” Temperature Reaches 51°C
Delhi is currently experiencing a significant heatwave, with the temperature soaring to a “feel like” measurement of 51°C, the highest recorded this year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the actual mercury reached 41.5°C, but because of the combination of high humidity and other factors, the discomfort level has increased drastically. This extreme heat has raised public health concerns, especially for vulnerable populations.
Residents are being cautioned to stay indoors and hydrate frequently as the forecast suggests rain is expected to arrive by Monday, which may provide some relief from the sweltering conditions.
The continued rise in temperatures is attributed to climate change and urban heat exposure, which particularly affects urban areas like Delhi, where concrete and asphalt trap heat. The citys geographical positioning also contributes to its weather challenges, with limited airflow and high humidity levels enhancing the heats impact.
In light of these conditions, the IMD has issued a warning for possible thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, which could disrupt the ongoing heatwave.
As nighttime temperatures remain uncomfortably high, many residents, particularly low-income individuals without access to air conditioning, struggle to find relief. Reports indicate that indoor temperatures can exceed 45°C during the evenings, making sleep increasingly difficult.
Authorities are urging everyone to exercise caution during this extreme weather, particularly for outdoor workers and those with pre-existing health conditions.
