Increase in Food Poisoning Incidents Raises Concerns About Food Safety Standards

A recent assessment of food safety across India indicates that nearly three-fourths of all States and Union Territories have recorded low to moderate scores on the Food Safety Index. This index evaluates various parameters related to food safety, including food testing and surveillance, infrastructure availability, and consumer awareness.

The Food Safety Index is a vital tool developed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to measure the effectiveness of food safety measures implemented in different regions. A low or moderate score may indicate potential risks in food handling, storage, and distribution, which could impact public health and safety.

Stakeholders are encouraged to address the factors contributing to these scores, including enhancing regulatory frameworks, investing in food safety infrastructure, and promoting consumer education regarding safe food practices. The government and related organizations aim to improve these scores by implementing targeted interventions and support systems for food safety measures in the regions identified.
